Product Application

How to prevent liftings with Hard Gel

Product liftings issues are one of the most common struggles when working with hard gel. Unlike base gels, where some application methods allow you to skip filing the edges, hard gel requires extra attention to detail. If the gel is not shaped and sealed properly, lifting will almost always occur.

Why? Hard gel is a rigid product, while the natural nail plate is flexible. This difference in flexibility can create movement between the two surfaces, leading to separation and lifting if the product is not fully sealed and refined.

The Importance of Edge Filing

When working with hard gel, always remember: the edge must be filed and sealed. If the free edge is left unfinished, even a perfect application will eventually lift. Filing ensures the hard gel wraps seamlessly around the natural nail, locking it in place for stronger, longer-lasting results.

Advanced Technique: Flip and Refine

To achieve the best retention, don’t stop at surface filing. After you’ve shaped the nail:

  1. Flip the client’s hand upside down. This gives you a clear view of the underside and corners of the free edge—areas often missed during standard filing.

  2. Use a precision nail bit (for example, a tapered barrel or cone-shaped carbide/diamond bit) to gently smooth the inside of the free edge and corners.

  3. By thinning and refining these hidden areas, you eliminate excess bulk and ensure that the gel is completely sealed around the nail plate.

  4. Finish with a light buff to smooth any roughness before moving on to your top coat.

This small but powerful step significantly decreases the chance of lifting, especially on clients with more flexible or active nails.

Pro Tips for Retention

  • Always seal every edge and corner—no shortcuts.

  • Maintain proper apex and balance to support the natural nail’s flexibility.

  • Use the correct nail bit for precision filing; avoid aggressive bits that can cause micro-cracks.
